On April 24, U.S. President Trump announced that starting from April 2, the U.S. may impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from any country that directly or indirectly imports Venezuelan oil, claiming that this Latin American country is full of "hostility" toward the U.S.
On the same day, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry issued a statement firmly opposing the U.S. government's imposition of secondary tariffs on countries engaged in oil and gas trade with Venezuela.
On April 25, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiaqun held a regular press conference and responded to this incident:
Guo Jiaqun: The U.S. has long abused illegal unilateral sanctions and so-called "long-arm jurisdiction," crudely interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, to which China strongly opposes. We call on the U.S. to stop interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs, to lift its illegal unilateral sanctions against Venezuela, and to do more to promote peace, stability, and development for Venezuela and other countries.
There are no winners in trade wars or tariff wars; increasing tariffs will only cause greater losses for U.S. businesses and consumers.
Additionally, Trump stated on April 24 that he would announce additional tariffs on cars, timber, and chips in the coming days.
