On January 14, the Biden administration officially released the final rule titled "Protecting the Information and Communication Technology and Services Supply Chain: Connected Vehicles," which prohibits the sale or import of connected vehicles that integrate specific hardware and software supplied by entities "under the jurisdiction or control of foreign adversaries," as well as the retail of related components.

This move not only blocks the entry of Chinese cars and trucks into the U.S. market but also prevents vehicles produced in other countries that use Chinese-made hardware and software from being sold in the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Commerce stated that starting with the 2030 model year, it will prohibit the import of vehicle connectivity system hardware from China and Russia, including Bluetooth, cellular, and satellite components.
From the 2027 model year, the use of autonomous driving software from China and Russia will also be banned.
For vehicles without a model year, the hardware ban will take effect on January 1, 2029.
The U.S. Department of Commerce also requires certain importers and manufacturers to submit annual reports to demonstrate compliance with the ban.
