In July 2024, the container throughput of Houston Ddp Port decreased by 5% compared to the same period last year, handling 325277 TEUs.

Due to Hurricane Beryl and brief disruptions in global systems, operations are facing challenges this month. Nevertheless, container throughput has increased by 10% so far this year, totaling 2423474 TEUs, and the port is preparing for a strong peak season.

So far this year, due to strong consumer demand and the establishment of new import distribution centers in the region, the volume of loaded imports has increased by 9%, exceeding 1 million TEUs. The importer adjusted their network to transport more goods through Houston. So far, the export of loaded goods has also increased by 12%, mainly due to the prosperity of the resin market.

In addition, the Port of Houston remains the main gateway for resin exports in the United States, holding a 60% market share. Although the import and export of goods slightly decreased in July, the total container volume has increased by 10% this year due to increased trade with the Caribbean, South America, and East Asia. In addition, due to the relocation of containers by shipping companies for incoming goods, the empty container volume increased by 10%.

The ongoing infrastructure investment highlights Houston Port's commitment to growth, including the addition of three new Ship to Shore (STS) cranes to its fleet at Bayport Container Terminal later this month. These cranes will increase the capacity and efficiency of Terminal 6 and Terminal 2.

Compared to July 2023, the amount of steel used in the Houston Port multipurpose facility decreased by 14% in July and by 9% year to date. So far this year, ordinary goods have also decreased by 12%, although specific categories of goods such as plywood, wind power equipment, and wood/fiberboard have increased. Despite some decline, the total tonnage of all facilities has still increased by 3% so far this year, reaching 30888040 tons.

So far this year, our double-digit growth highlights the resilience and strategic importance of the Port of Houston in the global transport chain, and we expect strong performance in the third quarter as well. We have faced some challenges locally this month, but our team has performed well in quickly rebounding and maintaining Houston's renowned first-class customer service. I am immensely proud of our team, and when I retire at the end of this month, I am confident that the port will continue its successful trajectory for many years to come, "said Roger Gunther, Executive Director of Houston Port.
