Due to severe weather conditions, air transportation between the United States and Canada has been disrupted

Due to a winter storm and a Delta Air Lines regional jet crash at Toronto Airport on Monday, package and air freight customers in parts of North America are experiencing transportation delays.

FedEx (NYSE: FDX) stated in an online service alert that severe weather conditions have disrupted flight operations at its global air hub in Memphis, Tennessee, and some customers may experience delivery delays on Wednesday. When announcing a nationwide service interruption, FedEx will not provide refunds or credits under its money-back guarantee program.

On Tuesday night, several inches of snow and sleet fell in the southeastern region, including Memphis. According to weather forecasts, severe cold weather in the area is expected to last until Friday.

Earlier this week, FedEx notified customers that delays could occur due to severe flooding in Kentucky.

A snowstorm has also reached Louisville, Kentucky, home to UPS’s major air hub. The logistics giant indicated that the scheduled delivery times for a limited number of air and international packages may be affected by disruptions at its Worldport facility.

Further north, Toronto Pearson International Airport closed two runways, including one of Canada’s busiest, resulting in reduced flight capacity as the airport recovers from the Delta crash and three snowstorms last week. According to airport duty manager Jack Keating, two additional runways have opened.

The FreightWaves sonar platform shows key weather events affecting freight, including Arctic temperatures.

Airports are limiting the number of takeoffs allowed throughout the day to ensure operations do not become overloaded and planes are not left waiting at the airport for boarding gates. He stated on Toronto’s morning show CP24 that Nav Canada, the air traffic control manager, is also restricting incoming flights.

On Wednesday, approximately 950 flights were arriving and departing from Toronto Pearson Airport. The airport reported on X that about 5.5% of flights had been canceled as of 7 AM.

Investigators stated that the overturned Delta CRJ-900 aircraft will remain on the runway for 48 hours while they continue to gather information regarding the cause of the accident. Keating noted that once the aircraft is removed from the runway, the airport will still need to conduct inspections to ensure that the runway and equipment are undamaged before reopening to commercial traffic.

Severe weather has posed challenges for airlines operating in eastern Canada.

Air Canada indicated on Tuesday that it had canceled nearly 1,300 flights over the past six days, but flight restrictions at the Toronto hub are slowing recovery.

The company stated in a press release, “We expect it may take a few more days to fully return to normal operations, depending on weather conditions.”

The airline’s cargo division operates six Boeing 767-300 freighters and manages cargo on passenger aircraft. The division separately noted that delays, diversions, and cancellations of flights to and from Toronto have resulted in cargo being postponed.

Air Canada stated in a statement provided to FreightWaves, “Considering the impact of the weather events in Toronto and Montreal, as well as the temporary closure of Toronto runways due to Monday’s incident, our cargo operations have been affected by a ripple effect, but it is still too early to determine the extent of the impact as conditions remain unstable.”

Cargojet (TSX: CJT), a Canadian all-cargo operator, indicated through spokesperson Courtney Ilola via email that the recent weather events have not affected its operations at its hub in Hamilton, Ontario, near Toronto. She did not specify whether cargo transiting to Toronto via international airlines would be delayed in being transferred to its domestic network.

According to fourth-quarter results released on Tuesday, the airline handled record passenger volumes during the holiday season while dealing with severe weather conditions.
